The Costa Rica Road is a road that crosses the country from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific, through rural and indigenous communities; 280 kilometers, divided into 16 stages. A road that should be on the list of activities to do for all Costa Ricans.
The Costa Rica trail is not only 16 stages of nature trails, with wonderful views, extravagant flora showing off to those who love details, birds harmonizing the landscapes with their songs, rivers in a competition to refresh the environment; it is a deep immersion in the natural heart of the country. In each section, hikers can experience different ecosystems, from tropical rainforests to dry jungles, passing through mountains and valleys. The biological diversity of the route is impressive, allowing the sighting of numerous species of endemic plants and animals, making each stage a unique adventure.
Each stage of the Costa Rican trail sharpens the mind; it is a route that illuminates the regions of the brain involved in memory and decision making. According to studies, walking in nature can improve problem-solving, planning and organizational skills, as well as mental adaptability and flexibility. It also helps lower blood pressure, regulate heart rate and improve mood. Cortisol levels, the stress hormone, are also reduced, which improves sleep and fosters creativity. In addition, exposure to natural light and fresh air stimulates the production of serotonin, the neurotransmitter that improves mood and increases feelings of well-being.
The Costa Rica trail not only offers physical benefits; it is also a bridge to improved emotional intelligence. Spending time in nature helps develop greater awareness of self and others, fostering empathy and understanding. In addition, the challenges presented by the trail, from planning each stage to overcoming natural obstacles, strengthen intrapersonal intelligence and the ability to make decisions under pressure. This translates into greater emotional resilience and a better ability to handle stress in daily life.
The Japanese have a technique called shinrin-yoku or forest bathing, which consists of a contemplative immersion in nature as a form of therapy. This practice has proven to have multiple benefits for mental and physical health, such as reducing stress, improving the immune system and increasing energy. The Costa Rican path promotes a deep connection with the environment and with oneself.
The Costa Rica trail is 280 kilometers of pure nature, a trail of natural light and fresh air, stimulating serotonin, the neurotransmitter that improves mood and increases the feeling of well-being. It is a path to mental health.
Of course, psychological therapy will always occupy the first place to improve mental health, but the Costa Rican way will always be one of my favorite techniques.
